East Ren helping tackle problem of empty homes

Tell us where empty homes are in East Renfrewshire.

There are around 34,000 empty long-term private sector rental properties in Scotland.

To help get East Ren's empty homes back into use, the council is asking locals to get in touch with details of empty properties in the area.

East Ren's housing team is committed to improving the lives of residents through providing affordable suitable housing. Getting empty properties back into use as homes can contribute to meeting local housing needs and at the same time improve the local environment.

Councillor Danny Devlin, East Renfrewshire convener for housing and maintenance services said: "Bringing empty homes back into use has many benefits and whilst not solving all our housing issues, can certainly be part of a positive solution.

"The council wants to talk to residents who have empty properties and are keen to sell these buildings or bring them back into use. We are able to offer a range of advice, support and practical assistance to help them do this. We're also appealing to locals to get in touch if they know of any homes in their area they think might be vacant.

"The longer a home lies empty the less valuable it becomes. Vacant buildings deteriorate and often attract vandals. On the other hand, getting a home back into use can improve its value, reduce the owner's financial outgoings and provide an income for the owner whilst improving the local environment."

Owners and residents are being asked to contact the council on 0141 577 8362, or email the housing team.
