Rouken Glen celebrates green flag award

Green flag award for Rouken Glen yet again.

 Large 2016

One of Scotland's best-loved parks, Rouken Glen in East Renfrewshire, has been awarded a Green Flag by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful.

The popular visitor attraction received its sixth Green Flag Award this week - a sign to visitors that the park is well-maintained and well-managed, with excellent facilities.

Rouken Glen Park is one of 70 parks and green spaces to have been awarded the honour in Scotland this year.

The Green Flag Award is the benchmark for a quality green space.

East Renfrewshire Council's environment convener Councillor Vincent Waters said: "Rouken Glen Park holds a very special place in the heart of its visitors and I'm thrilled that it's been awarded another Green Flag. This latest Green Flag award is the icing on the cake for Rouken Glen as this year it celebrates the completion of £3m investment works. The park's facilities now include a refurbished visitor centre and exhibition, new playpark and redeveloped walled garden. And the area has also benefitted from conservation work on the boating pond and restoration of the Glen Path on the west side of Rouken Glen. To mark the completion of the investment works we're holding a Celebration Day on Saturday 30 July from 12-5pm. I'd like to invite people to come along and see for themselves why this park is so popular with visitors.
- Councillor Vincent Waters, East Renfrewshire Council's Convener for Environment

Green Flag Award winning parks and open spaces are judged against eight criteria - including whether they are clean and well maintained, if the heritage is promoted and conserved, whether the local community is involved and if there is excellent management of the site.

The Green Flag Award is the international benchmark of a quality park or green space and is awarded annually to parks that meet strict criteria.
