Rouken Glen book launch - Katy Green

'Discovering Rouken Glen - The History of the Park and its People', a limited edition pictorial journey of the UK's Best Park,is on sale from today (Friday 9 December).

Written by a group of dedicated volunteers, 'Discovering Rouken Glen' is the first comprehensive book about the green space and takes the reader through the lifetime of this cherished park.

Funded by East Renfrewshire Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the title is a stunning and insightful read covering the geology of Rouken Glen, the history of farming and industry on the land, its estate buildings, landscape, 20th century in the park and finally, the present day.

Rouken Glen has such a rich history and the geology of the park is fascinating. It holds such a special place in the hearts of all of its visitors so I am delighted that we have now created the first comprehensive book about the park. The book is fantastic and my thanks go out to the volunteers, council staff and the Heritage Lottery Fund for making it possible. It really is an ideal gift for this festive season for any nature lovers or history enthusiasts.
Councillor Vincent Waters - Convener for Environment

As a public park, Rouken Glen dates back to just over a century, when a wealthy Glasgow Member of Parliament bought the land from a local industrialist and gifted it to the city. However, the history of the park dates back much further. The area was cut by meltwater at the end of the last glaciation, around ten thousand years ago, and the rocks which lie under the park date back to the Carboniferous period over 300 million years ago.

Today, Rouken Glen is an award-winning attraction. It was crowned the UK's Best Park at the Fields in Trust awards last week and a £3m transformation project was completed this summer. Improvement works have included the refurbishment of the Pavilion Visitor Centre, a £300,000 inclusive children's playground, restored Glen Walks area, a re-developed Walled Garden and extensive conservation work on the boating pond - affectionately known as 'Swan Lake'.

The book is priced £10 and is available from Rouken Glen Pavilion Visitor Centre (card payments only), council offices in Barrhead and Eastwood Park or by calling 0141 577 3001.
