Issues identified through rigorous checks
Remedial work is set to be carried out at Mearns Primary School following issues identified through a process of inspection.
All East Renfrewshire Council (ERC) schools were inspected as a precaution last year when the issues around the construction of Edinburgh schools arose.
No safety concerns were found at any ERC schools through this process however these inspections did identify some areas for further investigation at Mearns Primary School.
Since then Bellrock, the company that owns and manages the school building, has carried out some small scale remedial work and a series of further technical surveys.
This process has confirmed that additional work to some external wall structures is needed at Mearns Primary. The work will begin over the Spring break and is anticipated to be complete within six weeks.
As a precaution arrangements are being made to erect fencing around the areas where work is due to take place.
The Council has been advised that any low risk which exists would only be under extreme weather conditions and that the steps being taken will ensure that the school site is safe.
The safety of our pupils and staff is paramount and the work that is required at Mearns Primary School has been identified through a rigorous process of investigation and inspection. As a precautionary measure the fencing that is being put in place will ensure that the school site is safe for all our staff and pupils. Whilst the work will involve some temporary arrangements being put in place at the school, our priority is to mitigate any risk however minor and I am sure that parents will understand.
