East Renfrewshire students seek sponsorship to compete in engineering world finals

Woodfarm High School team to head to Abu Dhabi this December.

Team Docs Woodfarm

A team of students from Woodfarm High is seeking sponsorship to take their remote controlled car to the finals of one of the most exciting challenges in modern engineering.

Having won the national Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) 4x4 challenge earlier this year, Woodfarm's 'Team Docs' now need to raise £10,000 to cover the five-day trip to the global finals in December.

The team are already some way towards their target, raising £2,000 of sponsorship so far.  A further £8,000 is still needed however to take them to the finals in Abu Dhabi.

In the lead up to December, Team Docs - Daniel, Rory, Rowan, Lewis, Jake and Suzanne - will focus on developing their prototype car and raising the funds to compete against 16 others teams from around the world, including the current champions from Australia.

The team will also act as junior ambassadors for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Scottish schools by hosting a roadshow on Tuesday 4 October at their school.

Pupils from twelve other schools across Greater Glasgow have been invited to the roadshow, where Team Docs will present their prototype vehicle and JLR test track. Pupils attending will also have the opportunity to test out Team Docs' CAD design suite, manufacture 3D printed parts, try their hand at computer coding, and test drive the team's prototype car.

Dr Simon Hadfield, Principal Teacher of Science at Woodfarm High School, said: "We were the only school in Scotland to compete in the JLR 4x4 Challenge, and we had to go to the North East of England for the regional heats this year. We want to encourage pupils and other schools in the region to understand the advantages they can get from competing in future competitions."
