Council tax exemption for care leavers

Young care leavers are exempt from paying council tax from 1 April 2018.

Care leaver

You are a care leaver if:

You attended a children's hearing and were looked after by a local authority at any point from 16 years old.

This includes:

  • looked after at home by relatives
  • foster care
  • residential care away from your home

Who can apply for Care Leaver Council Tax exemption?

If you are a care leaver, you could be exempt from paying council tax if you:

  • have been looked after a local authority from 16 years old or any subsequent period after this date
  • are between 16 and 26 years
  • live on your own

Council tax discount for care leavers

If you a carer leaver between 16 and 26 and live with another person, you could be entitled to a council tax discount.
