Advice that is available on energy bills, changing your energy supplier and the priority services register.

At East Renfrewshire council, we want to ensure that residents in all housing tenures, live in warm, dry and energy efficient homes.

With increasing energy prices, more and more people are finding it difficult to heat their homes and manage household fuel costs. Struggling with your bills and dealing with cold and damp homes can have an influence on your health and wellbeing.  Whether this is a result of poor energy efficiency, or if you're struggling to get by on a low income, the council is here to help.

Changing energy supplier

Understanding your energy bills can be confusing and difficult to understand. We want to make sure that you are getting the necessary support for understanding energy bills and changing suppliers.

Your current energy supplier may be charging you at a higher rate than others. One of the simplest ways to save money is by switching your energy supplier or tariff.  

The energy market is constantly changing and as competition grows, suppliers are increasingly offering better rates. 

To find out if you are getting the best deal, visit an Ofgem accredited comparison site.

Tips for switching

Remember that although certain suppliers can save you money, levels of customer service and support can vary.  Be sure to consider all factors before switching.


Priority services register

The Priority Services Register offers additional services free of charge, to customers in need of extra assistance. 

If you are a pensioner, have long-term ill health, are registered disabled or have a hearing or visual impairment, you may be eligible to register. Examples of the free services available include:

  • Help with meter readings
  • Priority in an emergency
  • Option to request a bill nominee
  • Password scheme

For further information or to register, please contact your energy supplier. You will find details of how to contact your supplier on your gas or electricity bill. 

Remember that if you get your gas and electricity from different suppliers, you'll need to register with each one to ensure that you receive all the additional services you are entitled to.
