Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes
Gardens and Designed Landscapes enrich the texture and pattern of our landscapes and form a unique record of social, cultural and economic change through time.
The Inventory is a record of gardens and designed landscapes of national artistic and/or historical significance in Scotland.
The list holds no statutory basis and inclusion of a site does not offer any legal protection. However, Planning Authorities are required to consult the Scottish Ministers, through the Historic Buildings Inspectorate in respect of any development which may affect a historic garden or designed landscape.
Who is responsible for determining Gardens and Designed Landscapes?
Historic Scotland is responsible for selection of gardens and designed landscapes for the Inventory. To be included on the Inventory a site will usually have to meet a majority of criteria based on the following values:
- Work of Art
- Horticultural, Arboricultural and Silvicultural
- Nature Conservation
