Winter road maintenance

Find information on gritting routes, self-service grit and our winter maintenance plan.

Our staff work 24 hours on standby during the winter.

We get road updates from a specialist forecasting service at least three times a day.

Roadside sensors also send information to help monitor road conditions. This helps us decide what action to take.

When do we start gritting?

We grit roads when or before the temperature reaches freezing or below - 0°C.

Gritting routes and grit bins

Gritting routes are carefully planned to make sure we cover the main routes in East Renfrewshire. This includes main A roads, bus routes and fire stations.

There are 334 grit bins throughout East Renfrewshire.

There is salt inside the bins for you to use to make the road or path safer. You will need to have your own container or shovel.

You can also collect small amounts of salt from our depot a Carnwadric Road, during office hours. You must bring your own container.

Tell us about a winter road problem

You can report problems with snow and ice on roads and pavements and issues with gritting.

It is difficult to add extra roads or pavements to our priority routes as we are already fully committed during severe conditions. However we log all requests for assistance and will aim to provide this when resources from our priority operations become available.
