Straight Off Straight Away

Dangers of hair straighteners being left unattended while hot

Straight Off Straight Away

East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership are working in association with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) to raise awareness of the dangers of hair straighteners being left unattended while hot.

The campaign urges parents and carers to turn straighteners Straight Off, and put them Straight Away. Parents can help protect their children from these burns by using a heat resistant bag and East Renfrewshire's Health and Social Care Partnership have a limited amount of these available for residents to pick up free of charge should they require their use.

"Straight Off, Straight Away" is a campaign that RoSPA and NHSGGC are involved in to raise awareness of hair straightener burns to children.

The campaign informs people that hair straighteners can reach up to between 210 - 230°C, nearly six times the temperature of a household hot water supply, three times the temperature of a freshly -made cup of tea, and hotter than a domestic iron. The extremely high temperature can have devastating effects for anyone who touches hot hair straighteners and leave life-long scars, particularly for young children whose skin is thinner and more fragile than an adult's.

Parents can help protect their children from these burns by using a heat resistant bag and East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership have a limited number of heat resistant pouches available at reception at both Eastwood and Barrhead Health and Care Centres.

Heat resistant pouches will be given out on a first-come-first-served basis at the following Health and Care Centres below:

Eastwood Health and Care Centre
Drumby Crescent
Clarkston
G76 7HN

Barrhead Health and Care Centre
213 Main Street
Barrhead
G78 1SA
