Provost supports blood donation

Event focuses on encouraging new donors to come forward

Give Blood 2019

East Renfrewshire's Provost is getting behind a campaign to encourage people of all faith, and no faith, to give blood.

Provost Jim Fletcher met with faith leaders and Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) representatives as part of the Islamic Unity Society's Imam Hussain Blood Donation Campaign (IHBDC).

Since the first Scottish event eight years ago, the campaign has increased steadily with donors making over 2,500 appointments to give blood at Edinburgh and Glasgow Donor Centres.

The national campaign is co-ordinated by The Scottish Ahlul Bayt Society (SABS), a charity that engages internationally with cultural, community and religious leaders, including Muslim students and young professionals.

They have joined with the SNBTS to work on and encourage new and existing blood donors to give blood.

As part of the campaign, SABS reach out to other community, faith and cultural leaders, asking them to encourage their communities to sign up as donors. In 2019, the campaign is reaching out to communities across East Renfrewshire to encourage new blood donors.

East Renfrewshire has a strong tradition of blood donation, with regular sessions in Clarkston, Neilston, Newton Mearns and Barrhead. These sessions welcome 1,800 blood donors every year. I am delighted to support SNBTS, and would like to encourage people to consider giving up an hour of their time to help save or improve the lives of people in Scotland. Provost Jim Fletcher

Anyone over the age of 17 in general good health and weighing more than 7st 12lbs, could potentially become a blood donor and help to save lives.
