World Breastfeeding Week 2019

World Breastfeeding Week aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding

World Breastfeeding Week 2019

World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is a global network of individuals and organisations dedicated to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding worldwide.

World Breastfeeding Week aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding through:

  • Parental social protection policies and legislation
  • Parent-friendly workplaces in both formal and informal sectors
  • Parent-friendly values and gender-equitable social norms

UK legislation protects a mother's right to breastfeed her child in any place that the child is allowed to be, without interruption or intrusion, and East Renfrewshire Council and HSCP welcome breastfeeding in all their buildings, places and spaces and have a policy to support this.

There are many benefits to breastfeeding which include:

  • Breastfeeding improves brain development making babies ready to learn.
  • Babies who are breastfed have fewer ear infections, tummy bugs, chest infections and dental problems in childhood. They are also less likely to develop diabetes or be obese in later life. The longer they are breastfed the better the protection.
  • Mothers who breastfeed are more likely to return to their pre pregnancy weight faster as breastfeeding burns around an extra 500 calories per day. Breastfeeding also reduces the risks of breast and ovarian cancer and osteoporosis in later life.
  • Breastfeeding has a lesser impact on the world's resources and is more sustainable.
  • Exclusively breastfeeding one child for six months and extending breastfeeding to one year with appropriate supplementary foods could save a UK household over £500.
