How we carry out food hygiene inspections

Find out how we inspect food business.

We inspect food businesses on a regular basis. How often we inspect depends on the risk rating we give it.

We score each business on:

  • whether they sell food
  • whether they prepare raw and ready-to-eat food on the same premises
  • structure of the premises
  • food hygiene and safety controls in place
  • number of people who are likely to use the business
  • confidence in management to improve or keep the standards


Each part of the report is scored on a sliding scale. The lower the score the better the report.

Food hygiene and safety procedures0 to 25
Premises structure0 to 25
Confidence in management0 to 30

We add an extra score if the business sells food to a large number of babies and children, older or vulnerable people.

Inspection certificates

The business should display a certificate with the outcome of the last report.

It will either say:

  • Pass - meets legal standards
  • Improvement required - doesn't meet legal standards
