Elections and voting

How e-counting works

The local government elections taking place on 4 May are held using the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system.

Under this system voters rank the candidates on the ballot paper in order of preference.

Because of the complicated nature of a count conducted under the STV system, ballot papers will be counted electronically.

Useful factsheets explaining how votes cast will be counted and how the STV voting system works have been produced.

Copies of both factsheets can be viewed in the Related documents section.

In addition, the Electoral Commission has produced an easy guide to the count and a copy of this can also be viewed in the Related documents section.
