Young care leavers are exempt from paying council tax from 1 April 2018.
Care leaver
You're a care leaver if you've attended a children's hearing and were looked after by a local authority at any point from 16 years old.
This includes:
- looked after at home by relatives
- foster care
- residential care away from your home
Who can apply?
If you're a care leaver you could be exempt from paying council tax if you:
- have been looked after a local authority from 16 years old or any subsequent period after this date
- are between 16 and 26 years
- live on your own

If you're a care leaver between 16 and 26 and live with another person, you could be entitled to a council tax discount.
