Getting to school

School Travel Plans

Information on how children travel to school and plans to support healthy and sustainable school travel choices.

Every East Renfrewshire primary  school has its own travel plan.   Each plan was written by the school with contributions from pupils, teachers, school travel co-ordinator, Police, Councillors and the school board. The plan's include research on each school's individual travel needs and identify any travel problems a school may have.

School Travel Plans are not just about transport but about improving health, broadening education, improving the environment, contributing to the community and combating social exclusion. Improvements may therefore cover a range of areas including physical changes to the area around the school, curriculum work, promotional events, training and so forth.

The way we travel has a huge impact on our economy, health, environment, and the resources available for future generations. It is estimated that 20 % of all vehicles on our roads at 08.50am are involved in school travel.  The challenge is to put sustainable transport measures into practice - for example; by providing the information, support and infrastructure to help those travelling to and from school to choose to walk, cycle, take public transport, or trip share more often than they currently do.
