Grey bin waste

To ensure we meet our recycling targets, we're working alongside four surrounding local authorities, North Lanarkshire, East Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire and North Ayrshire councils, to deliver a bespoke solution for the treatment of  residual waste  from households, which would otherwise be sent to landfill. 

Clyde valley residual waste partnership

Viridor Waste Management and the Clyde Valley Waste Partnership work to divert general household waste collections away from landfill, helping us to not only meet our landfill diversion target but also to produce energy direct to the national grid. 

A number of community benefits will be delivered over the term of the contract, including employment opportunities across the partner councils.

What happens in East Renfrewshire?

Bin lorries take the waste to Greenhags, which is operated by Viridor. We deliver 20,000 tonnes of residual household waste annually, with a combined total of over 190,000 throughout the five local authorities.

Viridor transports the waste from Greenhags to its Materials Recovery Facility at Bargeddie in North Lanarkshire.

The waste is treated at Bargeddie, removing plastics and metals for recycling, to produce a refuse-derived fuel. This is transported to Dunbar Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) where it's burned at high temperatures, under carefully controlled conditions, to produce 258GWh of low carbon electricity - enough power for the equivalent of 70,656 homes.

Currently no waste brought to the Clyde Valley Waste Contract is landfilled, including the end of life ash products from the ERF process.
