Registering for Employee & Manager Self Service
Welcome to East Renfrewshire Council!
This page is designed to help employees through the registration process to gain access to their Employee & Manager Self Service accounts.
What is ESS and MSS?
- Employee Self Service (ESS) allows you to check and update your personal details, your employment record, your payslips and dependent on your role submit mileage, timesheets, overtime and corporate training requests online to your manager for approval.
- Manager Self Service (MSS) is a separate system which allows managers to approve requests from their direct line reports and to also check their employment details.
You can't register for this service until HR Systems have set up your account. Once this is complete they will send a communication to the email address that you should use for the registration process.
Please note: If you don't have regular access to your work email, then you can contact HR Systems to update the email address held against your account.
Managers only need to register once to access both services and will use the same login details. However, the email address used must be their work email.
What is Multi-factor authentication (MFA)?
East Renfrewshire Council uses Multi Factor Authentication to ensure the security of the data we hold for you. As you'll use MFA to verify your account there's additional info below to explain what this means, and a short video below that explains how this works.
- MFA uses a 2-step electronic authentication process to identify and verify a user before granting access to a system.
- When MFA is in place for a system, the user is required to present two or more factors via an authentication mechanism in order to gain access to the system - something only you know (such as username and password), something only you have (such as a unique code obtained on a different device to one being used to log in to the system) or something only you are (such a finger print or face id).
- East Renfrewshire's MFA use something you know and something you have.

Then click on the register button highlighted below and follow the User Guide (Word doc) [2MB] to complete the sign up process.
E-Learning
ERC also provide access to an E-Learning site which is separate to HR Self Service and allows you to complete online training courses.
To access the e-learning enter your employee number, which can be found in the personal details section of ESS and password.
All new employees are set up with a default password which is your surname. Once you complete the login procedures you will be asked to reset your password to something more secure and select a security question.
Thereafter you will be able to use the password reset function, if need be, in the future.
