Apply for a personal licence.

What's a personal licence?

A personal licence authorises the holder to supervise or authorise the sale of alcohol.

The premises licence holder and the personal licence holder don't have to be the same person, but the premises manager must be noted on the premises licence.

Further to the premises licence, whoever manages and operates a premises that sells alcohol must have a personal licence.

Please note, you must renew your training qualification every 5 years.

Eligibility criteria

To become a personal licence holder you must:

  • pass a course by an approved trainer
  • be aged 18 or over
  • be resident in East Renfrewshire to apply to the East Renfrewshire Licensing Board
  • not have had a personal licence revoked in the last 5 years

Applications should be accompanied by 2 passport photographs and the applicant's qualifications certificate.

What happens next?

Your application will be sent to the Chief Constable and you may be contacted by the police to verify certain details. If any of the eligibility criteria aren't met your application will be refused.

If you meet the criteria, but the Board receives a notice from the Chief Constable specifying any previous convictions, you'll be invited to attend a hearing to determine the application.

If you meet the criteria and no notice of convictions is received your application will be granted.

If you're convicted of any relevant offences after the licence is granted you must inform the Licensing Board.

If you don't hear from us about the outcome of your application within a reasonable period email celicensing@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk for an update.
