What's the Thornliebank Shopfront Improvement Grant Scheme and what does it entail?

The Scheme aims to help elevate the appearance of ground-floor shop frontages of independent commercial premises on Main Street, Thornliebank with grant funding up to a maximum of £10,000 available. 100% funding is available to develop both occupied and vacant premises.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for a shopfront improvement grant one or more of the following criteria must be met:

  • you must be the business owner of an independent shop on Main Street, Thornliebank
  • if you are not the owner of the premises being applied for, you must provide written consent from the property owner to undertake the works before a grant can be offered
  • with regard to the replacement of shared close doors, all property owners with communal rights must provide written consent for replacement works before a grant can be offered
  • applicants must have at least 3 years left on the lease to their property
  • applicants must have no debts owing to East Renfrewshire Council

What projects are eligible for funding?

  • removal of old frontage (if required)
  • replacing windows
  • preparation of exterior, including minor repairs
  • painting of shop entrances, windows and frontages
  • sign writing, repair or replacement of signage
  • restoring/reinstating traditional architectural features e.g. fascia, corbels, console brackets, pilasters
  • introduction of traditional awnings/canopies (planning permission required)
  • introduction of signage set at common heights with neighbours at base/sill and facade levels
  • introduction of new perforated roller shutters for a softer feel while maintaining security
  • facades above shopfronts repaired/reinstated, painted and/or mixed materials (e.g. timber and tile)
  • shop window graphics/manifestations
  • residential/commercial close door replacement
