An all-weather athletics track and sports pitch will be developed for Mearns Castle High School after the plans were approved by councillors on Wednesday 29 September 2021.

The existing blaes pitch will be replaced with a modern six-lane running track and a 3G pitch will be created in the centre of the track.

A storage building will also be built, as well as floodlighting installed as part of the improved facility. The wider playing fields area within Broom Park will not be impacted by the development.

Pedestrian access from Broomburn Drive to the existing footpath and steps to Mearns Castle High School will also be retained.

The existing blaes-surfaced sports pitch and running track is around 40 years old and are in a poor state of repair meaning they do not meet the needs of the school.

The planning application has been approved with a number of conditions which need to be met. These include restricting the use of the facility to 9am-7pm Monday to Friday and 9am-1pm on a Saturday.

Councillor Alan Lafferty, Convener for Education and Equalities, said: 'I'm delighted that planning permission has been granted for the much-needed upgrade to these facilities at Mearns Castle High School. We are committed to investing in the future of our children and young people, and these improved sports facilities will bring fantastic benefits to the school. I look forward to seeing work getting under way and I'm sure the pupils will be excited to have the opportunity to use the new running track and pitch once completed.'
