Bonfires and smoke nuisance

Find out how to report a bonfire.

You are allowed to burn a bonfire as long as it doesn't:

  • cause a nuisance. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (as amended) it is an offence for people to dispose of their garden waste in a way likely to cause nuisance.
  • burn dark smoke on industrial or trade premises

Report a bonfire

You can report bonfires causing a nuisance. You need to tell us:

  • location
  • time it started
  • colour of smoke
  • your contact number
