Scottish Youth Parliament election results announced in East Renfrewshire
We announced the results of the 2024-25 Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) elections at an event at Eastwood House.
Published: 5 March 2024
SYP constituencies are the same as the Scottish Parliament constituencies with three seats in total in East Renfrewshire, two in Eastwood and one in Renfrewshire South.
The following candidates were successfully elected as Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs):
- Jenson Black, Eastwood constituency
- Rydha Bhatti, Eastwood constituency
- Yasmine Zourdani, Renfrewshire South constituency
The Scottish Youth Parliament is the democratically elected voice of Scotland's young people. Around 160 young people aged 14-25 are elected every two years to represent every local authority and a number of voluntary organisations and campaign for positive change.
Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament are the voice of young people across Scotland and ensure their views are reflected in the work of the Scottish Youth Parliament on local and national issues.
1,400 young people across East Renfrewshire voted to elect the next SYP membership from Monday 19 February - Sunday 3 March. The election runs on the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system and votes cast will give the newly elected MSYPs the democratic mandate to represent constituents' views.
Steven Quinn, Chief Executive of East Renfrewshire Council and Returning Officer for this year's election said: 'A huge congratulations to our new Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament who have been elected. MSYPs carry out valuable work for young people across East Renfrewshire so I'm looking forward to seeing the changes you drive and the impact you make during your term. I'm delighted that this year we had candidates standing from across each of our seven high schools, you all had important key issues which you put yourselves forward for, so you should all be proud of yourselves for your election campaign. My thanks go to all of the young people who took the time to vote, I'm certain our new MSYPs will continue to strive to make East Renfrewshire a better place for your generation.'
