Services marking Remembrance Sunday to take place across East Renfrewshire

Events will be held across East Renfrewshire on Remembrance Sunday (9 November) to commemorate the contribution and loss of British and Commonwealth servicemen and women in the World Wars and all worldwide conflicts since.

Veterans, councillors, local dignitaries and residents will meet at services in Newton Mearns, Neilston and Barrhead to show their respects and pay tribute.

Royal British Legion Scotland, Newton Mearns branch will begin proceedings, assembling at Fairweather Hall by 10.40am, marching off at 10.50am to reach the war memorial beside Mearns Bowling Club on Ayr Road for a service and wreath laying at 11am.

The Glasgow branch of the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women, together with the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council, will assemble at Fairweather Hall at 10.15am, and will march alongside members of the Royal British Legion Scotland, Newton Mearns Branch for the service and wreath laying.

Neilston War Memorial Association are inviting community members to join an act of remembrance in Neilston. A parade will muster in Broadlie Road at 11.45am and move off when assembled for arrival at the war memorial for a short service of remembrance and wreath laying at 12 noon.

Attendees are welcome to bring a wreath to lay on behalf of their organisation. Tea and coffee will be available afterwards in St Thomas' RC Church Hall. Anyone wishing to attend should RSVP by emailing paul.o'kane.msp@parliament.scot.

In Barrhead, a parade will muster at 1.50pm outside the United Services Club with a 2pm march off to arrive at Cowan Park for a 2.30pm service and wreath laying.

Provost Mary Montague said: 'Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who fought valiantly to secure our freedom.

'Each year, East Renfrewshire stands together in remembrance, united in gratitude for those who gave so much and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

'It is an honour to attend Remembrance services across East Renfrewshire where I will be laying a wreath on behalf of the Council and paying my respects alongside the local community.'

Two-minute silences will be held at Remembrance Sunday events across East Renfrewshire, allowing a period of reflection to remember the Armed Forces community and military personnel from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

We're committed to a community covenant with the Armed Forces and Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire. This voluntary statement of mutual support recognises and remembers the sacrifices made by members of the community, including those currently serving as well as their families.

Working with partners, we're raising awareness and understanding of the issues affecting service personnel and improving local access to a range of supporting agencies.
