Armed Forces Day takes place nationally on the last Saturday in June, with celebrations beginning the Monday before when the Armed Forces Day flag is raised on buildings and landmarks around the country.

Provost Mary Montague joined Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire Colonel Peter McCarthy to raise the flag and show support and appreciation for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving troops to service families, civilians, veterans and cadets.

Guests including serving military personnel, veterans, elected members and members of the local community were welcomed by Provost Montague to the event.

The flag was raised by Charlie Stringer, Chairperson of Royal British Legion Scotland (Newton Mearns), and will fly all week in the lead up to the 15th national Armed Forces Day on Saturday 24 June and celebrate the service of the Armed Forces, past and present.

Provost Mary Montague said: 'The raising of the Armed Forces Day flag is an important event held annually by the Council to mark the start of Armed Forces Week and express our gratitude. It's an opportunity for us to raise public awareness of the outstanding contribution made by His Majesty's Armed Forces and honour the role members of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force, as well as Veterans, Cadets and Armed Forces families all play in keeping the UK safe, at home and abroad and thank them for their sacrifices.'

Colonel Peter McCarthy, Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire added: 'I am delighted that the Armed Forces Day Flag was raised in East Renfrewshire in recognition of the vital role that everyone in the Armed Forces family plays in keeping the nation safe, here at home and wherever they are serving abroad.'
