Community council elections

Published: 17 August 2023

Community councils are made up of local people who dedicate a small amount of their time to ensure their community thrives, and promote the wellbeing of their community and the people who live there.

East Renfrewshire is divided into 11 community council areas and each community council has a legal right to be consulted on important local issues, such as planning and licensing. These groups are a direct link between local people and public bodies such as the NHS and Police Scotland, and provide an opportunity to campaign on specific issues, run local events and support good causes.

Community Councillors have a vital voice on the issues that affect their community, liaising closely with local residents and us to ensure their local area thrives.

To serve as a Community Councillor you must be over the age of 16, reside in the community council area, be named on the unedited Electoral Register for East Renfrewshire as being resident within that community council area and not be, at the time of the relevant election or co-option, disqualified from being a member of a community council.

Councillor Owen O'Donnell, Leader of East Renfrewshire Council said: 'Becoming a Community Councillor is a great way to use your voice and have your say whilst positively impacting your local community. The Council encourages diversity and is welcoming people from all walks of life and backgrounds from across East Renfrewshire to come forward and stand to be elected. By doing so, you'll have an opportunity to make a real difference for your area. No prior experience is required, all that's necessary is to be passionate and care about your community and be able to dedicate a few hours each month to this rewarding and varied role, engaging with other likeminded residents to make East Renfrewshire a better place to live, work and visit.'

To request a nomination form email CCElections@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk or phone/text 07833716729.

Nominations must be completed by 4.45pm on Wednesday 13 September 2023.
