About Kinship Care

Find out about kinship care when parents or carers are unable to do so.

Kinship family

Kinship carers can be family or friends who are able to provide nurturing care for a child when their parents or carers are unable to do so.

This can be a private arrangement often referred to as informal between the parents and the relative or friend, or it can be a formal arrangement which can arise through involvement of children's social work services.

Kinship care can offer children security and stability allowing them to remain in care of family or friends usually within their local community. We know that across Scotland, there are thousands of family members and family friends caring for children in Kinship Care.
