Memorial inspections

Update on project

announcement

Published: 25 January 2021

Following guidance issued by the Scottish Government, local authorities are required to undertake memorial and headstone inspections within public cemeteries and kirkyards.

These inspections got underway in East Renfrewshire last year. The inspection programme is ongoing and if memorials are found to be unsafe, we may take remedial action in order to rectify this.

It should be noted that we are not required to restore memorials, only to ensure that they are safe.

The responsibility for maintaining memorials and headstones remains with lair owners.
