Guidance notes for second hand car dealer's licence applications

You need a licence to operate as a second hand car dealer.

How long does a licence run?

All licences will run for a period of three years from the date of approval (unless certain restrictions are imposed by the Licensing Committee).

About your application?

Your application will be assessed by the Licensing committee and a copy will be forwarded to Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and rescue Service, for comments/observations. Any convictions not declared by you will be disclosed by the Police and may affect your application.

Please note:

  • you have individual responsibility for ensuring that any applicable planning permission is obtained
  • The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service advise that you read their fire risk assessment information to ensure compliance with your responsibilities under The Fire Scotland Act 2005.
  • licences are not transferable

Required Documentation

  • all information on your application must be fully completed at time of submission
  • a Certificate of Compliance must be to signed and dated. The notice must be displayed prominently on premises for a period of at least 21 days informing members of the public of procedures relating to objections. As soon as possible after the expiry of the period of 21 days  you should a submit a certificate stating that you have complied with this requirement.
