Firework Control Zones
Find out about Firework Control Zones (FCZ) to restrict the use of fireworks in specific areas
We now have powers to set up Firework Control Zones (FCZ) to restrict the use of fireworks in East Renfrewshire. The Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022 gives discretionary powers to local authorities to designate an FCZ where it's considered there's a need to restrict the use of fireworks in specific areas. This is one of a number of changes to the law on the sale and use of fireworks in Scotland.
If an area is designated as an FCZ, members of the public aren't allowed to use fireworks, including on private property such as a garden.
There are some exemptions to this, which include:
- category F1 fireworks. These are classed as 'indoor fireworks' such as sparklers.
- public organised displays, subject to local licensing
Community request
If you believe there is an issue with fireworks in your area, a community request can be made by any community group for an area to be considered as a zone. An application form is available by emailing fcz@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk and one will be sent to you.
If the request is taken forward, the process will require a wider consultation in line with the legislation. Please be aware that given the required timescales for the consultation process, any applications must be submitted by 30 June each year.
