East Renfrewshire Council is now a member of the Homeswapper service. This means our tenants can sign up for free to find someone to swap their home with. We've joined Homeswapper to help provide more options for people looking to move, as traditional waiting lists are long and only a small number of homes become available each year.

HomeSwapper is the UK's leading home exchange service, helping social housing tenants like you swap homes with others. We're also working alongside Barrhead Housing, who are also members of Homeswapper.

If your current Council or Housing Association home no longer meets your needs, for example you need more space or need to move closer to work or family, you can use the service to find someone to swap with.

Why use HomeSwapper?

  • You can connect with thousands of tenants across the UK looking for a swap
  • Find your own move at a pace that suits you
  • Where your landlord is a member of Homeswapper, tenants get free access to HomeSwapper

If you're thinking about moving, HomeSwapper gives you control over finding a home that better suits your needs.

Steps to use HomeSwapper

Register on HomeSwapper, describe your current home, and set your preferences for the home you're looking for.

HomeSwapper will automatically show you potential swaps based on your needs, whether it's a one-to-one exchange or a multiway swap involving more than two households.

You can message potential swap partners, arrange viewings, and decide if the swap is right for you.

Once you've found a match, you'll need to apply for permission from your housing provider to complete the exchange.

Steps to complete the Mutual Exchange Application Process

Find another social housing tenant to swap homes with using HomeSwapper

Get written approval from your landlords.

If you're an existing council tenant with East Renfrewshire Council you will need to have a live waiting list application or register on this list before requesting a mutual exchange application form from your Neighbourhood Housing Officer

If you're a local Housing Association tenant or your housing provider is in another authority area, you'll need to contact your housing provider to obtain information about their process.

Your landlord will check your home.

If approved, they will allow the swap to go ahead and you will both sign the exchange agreement. You will then become a tenant of the landlord whose property you have swapped to

Reasons for Refusal

  • This can be due to problems like eviction notices or having special housing needs
  • A swap may not be granted if there are issues like overcrowding, rent arrears, or poor property condition

What to Do if Refused

  • You can ask for a review of the decision
  • Your landlord will explain the reasons for the decision, and their policy will be clear on rights of appeal.

Timeline

Mutual Exchange Applications are processed within 28 days. You will be given a decision on your application within this timescale.
