Speed Restrictions

Find out about our plans to introduce a 20mph speed limit on residential streets in East Renfrewshire.

We're planning to reduce the speed limit on residential streets in East Renfrewshire to 20mph. Our proposals aim to make streets in East Renfrewshire safer for everyone. Evidence shows that, if a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle travelling at 20mph, they're seven times more likely to survive than if they're hit at 30mph.

We also expect lower speeds to make our communities feel safer and quieter. This will further strengthen our quality of life and encourage more people to use walking, wheeling, and cycling for short trips around their local area.

The proposed changes will support the Scottish Government's National Strategy for 20mph, which aims to see the rollout of this safer speed limit in built-up areas across Scotland by the end of 2025.

Next Steps

The council is promoting a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to reduce the speed limit on all appropriate streets in East Renfrewshire to 20mph. View the TRO (PDF, 1 MB) and Statement of Reason. (PDF, 120 KB)

View our interactive map showing all the streets that would be affected.

The public consultation period is now open. If you'd like to show your support or make an objection to our proposals, please contact us by emailing roads@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk.

Before you contact us, we encourage you to read the Frequently Asked Questions page. Please note that the closing date for comments to be received is 13 June 2025.

When the consultation has closed, we'll review all of your comments and consider whether we need to make any changes to our proposals. We'll then present a report to the Cabinet seeking the approval of elected members - this will also include a summary of any representations received. If approved, the new speed limits will be introduced.

Future Implementation

At first, 20mph speed limits will be indicated by signs and road markings only. If there are significant problems with speeding, additional measures will be considered.

Our current proposals for 20mph predominantly include residential streets, and main roads will generally stay at 30mph. However, we know there are some stretches of main roads (such as nearby schools) that could benefit from lower speeds, so we'll consider the possibility of introducing 20mph in these areas at a later date.
