Find out how to book a taxi or private hire vehicle inspection

All vehicles must pass a vehicle inspection in order to become a taxi or private hire vehicle.  

You must book your vehicle in for an inspection and provide the vehicle inspection pass certificate before lodging an application for a taxi or private hire car licence. 

You'll need to book a partial inspection if your vehicle fails its full inspection. If it fails a partial inspection you'll need to book a full re-inspection.

Before you start 

  • You'll need your vehicle licence number and vehicle make and model details 
  • You'll need a debit or credit card to pay for your inspection 
  • You'll need your chassis number and vehicle date of registration

Eligibility criteria 

The vehicle must currently be registered with East Renfrewshire Council or in the process of applying to become a registered taxi or private hire vehicle with East Renfrewshire.   

How to book a vehicle inspection 

Inspection appointments are available Tuesday to Thursday from 8am until 2.30pm.

How to prepare for your inspection 

For your inspection make sure: 

  • a fire extinguisher is secured in the driver's footwell of the vehicle 

  • front and rear plate fittings are attached to the vehicle

  • a tariff sheet is displayed if there's a meter fitted 

You can order front and rear plates fittings and tariffs sheets online.

What happens next? 

You should attend our Thornliebank Depot 190 Carnwadric Rd, Thornliebank, Glasgow G46 8HR on your chosen inspection date and time.  

If your vehicle passes its inspection, you will be provided with a pass certificate on the day.

If this is the first inspection for the vehicle, you'll will be issued with plates once your vehicle licence application has been approved. 

If this is a renewal inspection, we'll be in touch once your plates are ready for collection. We may ask you to provide documents before your plates can be collected. 

If your vehicle fails its inspection, the inspector will advise you on what you need to do to arrange a re-inspection.
